Thomas du Toit, known as "The Tank", is a powerful prop who went from a surprise Super Rugby call-up at 18 to a World Cup winner, and then became one of the best front-rowers in England. Born in Cape Town in May 1995, he went to Paarl Boys' High School, captained their first team in 2013, played for South Africa Schools and joined the Sharks academy in Durban in 2014.

A try on debut

The Sharks named him in their Super Rugby squad in 2014 before he had played a single first-class match. On his senior debut that March, off the bench against the Border Bulldogs in East London, he scored a try within about fifteen minutes. He went on to play more than a hundred games for the Sharks, with a loan spell at Munster in 2016–17 and a short stint at Toulouse.

A late call to Japan

Du Toit wasn't in the original squad for the 2019 World Cup. He was called up during the pool stage to replace the injured Trevor Nyakane, and came home a world champion. He has since won the 2025 Rugby Championship, and was named in World Rugby's Dream Team of the Year in 2025.

Bath's treble

In 2023 he joined Bath, and they became the best team in England. He was named in the Premiership Team of the Season in both 2023–24 and 2024–25, and scored in two Premiership finals in a row: a defeat by Northampton in 2024, and the win over Leicester in 2025 that completed Bath's treble with the Challenge Cup and the Premiership Rugby Cup. In October 2025 the Sharks announced he would return to Durban from the 2026–27 season.
