Canan Moodie is one of the fastest risers in recent Springbok history: from school rugby in Paarl to a World Cup winner's medal in under four years. Born in Paarl in November 2002, he went to Paarl Boys' Primary and then boarded at Boland Agricultural High School, where he played centre and won a schools championship.
Bulls academy
Before heading north, Moodie represented Western Province's youth sides in 2019 and 2020, but it was the Bulls who offered him a path. He joined the Blue Bulls academy in Pretoria in 2021 and was called into the South Africa Under-20s for that year's international series, scoring twice against both Uruguay and Argentina. He made his Currie Cup debut for the Blue Bulls in January 2022 and scored on debut, and by the end of the 2021–22 United Rugby Championship he was a starter for the Bulls under Jake White, in a side that reached the final.
A try on debut
In August 2022 he was named in the Springbok squad for the Rugby Championship away games against Australia, and he scored a try in the 38th minute of his Test debut in Sydney. He was 19.
World Cup winner at 20
In 2023 Moodie made the final 33-man squad for the World Cup in France and came home a world champion. Since then he has won the Rugby Championship in 2024 and 2025, and his Test record is exceptional: 23 wins from 26 Tests, with nine tries.
Positions
He started his Test career on the wing, but lately he has mostly played outside centre, the position he played at school. He can also cover fullback, and that versatility is valuable in Rassie Erasmus's squads.
